An Air India flight from Bangaluru to Singapore would mark the starting of the operations of the new Bangaluru international airport past midnight on Saturday.
Air India's Airbus A320 flight IC 957 to Singapore will depart at 0001 hours on Saturday Friday, making it the first to depart from the new airport at Devanahalli.
Air India, which currently operates 18 daily flights from Bangaluru, has been operating from the existing HAL airport for over four decades.
The inauguration of the new airport was scheduled for Thursday but was delayed by a day till Friday following directive from the Election Commission due to the third and final phase of polling for the Karnataka assembly polls.
Directorate General of Civil Aviation today issued NOTAM or Notice to Airmen, instructing them to land and take off from the new airport with new coordinates.
Senior CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury, who heads the Parliamentary Standing Committee on civil aviation, has suggested the new airport be named after legendary Tipu Sultan.
He recently wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh saying that Devanahalli happens to be the birthplace of Tipu Sultan who valiantly fought the British in the 18th century.
