Orchid Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals on Monday said it has received European Union regulatory approval for marketing Piperacillin and Tazobactam injection, used in the treatment of bacterial infection.

The Chennai-based generic pharma firm filed the marketing authorisation for this product with the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency to enable the company to launch the product across EU countries, Orchid Chemicals said in a filing to Bombay Stock Exchange.

Piperacillin and Tazobactam for injection is used in the treatment or prevent infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria.

"Through this approval, we are expanding into a new product range of premium Penicillin Injectables and also foraying into EU generic market," Orchid Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals Managing Director K Raghavendra Rao said.

The company is launching the injection in the European Union through its exclusive marketing alliance with Hospira, Rao added.

Shares of the company closed at Rs 259.60, up 3.67 per cent on the BSE on Monday.
