The Government will finalise the developer of the 4,000 MW Ultra Mega Power Project at Tilaiya in Jharkhand by the end of this year even as it selected sites for three more such projects.

"The developer for the fourth Ultra Mega Power Project (UMPP) which is being set up at Tilaiya in Jharkhand would be finalised by the year-end, an official statement said.

The government has decided to set up three more UMPPs in the states of Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Orissa.

Tamil Nadu Government has confirmed a site at Cheyyur, along with a captive port at Paramankeni in the state for the development of the UMPP. It also requested for another one at Cuddalore for which the site details would be sent shortly.

Alongwith Tamil Nadu, Government of Maharashtra has confirmed the availability of Munge site in the state for setting up of a 4,000 MW ultra mega power project.

The availability of water for the already identified site at Bedabahal in Orissa was also confirmed by the state Government.

The Government also said it would conduct studies at the sites suggested by the Karnataka Goverment for the UMPPs before locating one in the state as the proposed sites are not coastal sites.

The study regarding the availability of water for the identified site in Chhattisgarh is already under progress.

Considering the pace of the earlier three ultra mega power projects at Mundra (Gujarat), Krishnapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and Sasan (Madhya Pradesh) the Government said that it would be possible to add 3,000 MW capacity from these units in the XIth Plan Period (2007-012).
