Wireless broadband internet is getting ready for an upgrade as WiMax — the faster, longer range version of WiFi (the technology to wirelessly access the Net) is all set to kick in.
How would you feel if you could connect to the net with the same ease as you dial that’s where WiMax comes in.
WiMax is a new wireless broadband with a wide range of up to 80 km and at a much faster speed and major telecos are too eager to lap up this opportunity.
"We have deployed WiMax services in some selected cities and it will mainly be for enterprise users," said Jagbir Singh, Global CTO, Mobility, Bharti Airtel.
But experts say WiMax will need entirely new networks and also the much scarce high frequency spectrum.
WiMax spectrum is expected to be auctioned by the end of this year and at one fourth the price of 3G spectrum.
Reliance Infocom already has some WiMax presence and Tata Communications and Bharti are ramping up for pan India WiMax plans once spectrum allocation takes place.
