India's top car maker Maruti Suzuki's cumulative export to Algeria has crossed over 50,000 units, making the African country its second largest overseas market.

"Exports to Algeria reached 50,462 with the last shipment from Nhava Sheva port. The Netherlands is the highest  export destination with over 67,700 units," a company official said.

With this feat, the African nation became the second biggest export market for the domestic car major, he added.

The company had exported 15,070 vehicles during the last financial year, while it was 8,651 units in 2006-07.

Maruti's overall export to Algeria is topped by its oldest model M800 that accounted a total of over 26,000 units. Other models exported to the country include Alto with over 13,800 units and over 10,600 Zens.

He said among the non-European markets, Algeria is the biggest buyer, followed by Chile, Sri Lanka and Nepal.

Algeria is leading the way this year too with over 5,000 units already being exported in the current fiscal. It is followed by Chile with over 3,800 vehicles.

MSI sells its cars in all the five continents, but Europe is the largest importer accounting for 56 per cent of the company's cumulative overseas sales.

The Netherlands is followed by Italy with over 41,000 units so far and and the UK with over 34,000 vehicles. Germany and Hungary too are among the countries that have imported over 20,000 Maruti Suzuki cars.

The company had exported 53,024 units in the last fiscal.

"This year too, the performance has been excellent with exports already touching 18,123 units, up by 28 per cent compared to the same period last year," the official said.

Earlier the company had announced to export two lakh cars annually by 2010-11.
