Mamata raises hope of Singur breakthrough

A breakthrough in the impasse over Singur issue could be in sight in 48 hours at the initiative of West Bengal Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee said on Wednesday.

''The governor has spoken to us and also spoken to the state government. It seems that within Wednesday or Thursday, a constructive blueprint will be formulated for a solution,'' she told a gathering here as her indefinite dharna entered the eleventh day.

''The positive side of our movement is that the Governor has personally taken the initiative. Gandhi has spoken to us. He has spoken to Trinamool Congress leader Partha Chatterjee a number of times,'' Banerjee said as earlier in the day Chatterjee met Gandhi for the fourth consecutive day.

Her remarks came a day after the Tatas announced suspension of work and was considering moving the Nano project out of Singur in West Bengal.

She also alleged TC workers were attacked by CPI(M) supporters.

''Such attacks before the Governor's meet is not appreciated. There should not be any provocation. I am saying with folded hands to the administration that peace is maintained. Either the government has to take responsibility or face the situation,'' Banerjee said.

Earlier, a group of local suppliers to the Tata small car project brickbatted Trinamool supporters and demanded that the TC chief leave the area within 24 hours.

The police prevented the processionists, who also demanded that work should resume at the small car plant, from approaching the dharna manch and dispersed them.
