With the great success of i10, both in international as well as the domestic markets, Hyundai Motor India (HMIL) is all set to launch i20 in Paris, but at the same time putting brakes on exports of Getz to European markets.
According to Heung Lheem, MD, Hyundai Motor India, the latest model in i-series would replace Getz in European markets towards the end of 2008. “We will free up our capacity by stopping the exports of Getz,” said Lheem.
Unlike its successors (i10 and Santro models) Getz failed to create excitement which may play a part in sealing its fate.
Getz registered sales of only 1300 units per month. Though it has a market share of just 1 per cent, its monthly exports touch 2500 units.
When i10 was launched, Santro's exports were stopped but it still continues to sell in India because of its past track record.
However, Hyundai might change its mind in the case of Getz and stopping exports could be the beginning of it.
