The Indian rupee plunged by 25 paise against the greenback in early trade on Wednesday following increased dollar demand from importers and capital outflows by foreign funds.
At the Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex) market, the local unit, which ended steady at 49.00/49.01 yesterday, fell by 25 paise to 49.25 against the greenback.
The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex yesterday closed higher by 460 points at 10,683.39.
