Experts on Economic Survey
NDTV Correspondent
Thursday, July 02, 2009 (New Delhi)

Pradeep Baijal, former Trai chairman and disinvestment secretary

โ€œI am happy that disinvesment is on the agenda and the targets are very ambitious. But it talks about minority disinvestment and so I am a bit disappointed. However, it is a good start.โ€

Abheek Barua, chief economist, HDFC Bank

โ€œThe fiscal gap cannot be brought down to 3 per cent just through disinvestment. I think political opposition matters less now. An increase in FDI limit for regular insurance companies is something that has been contemplated.โ€

ย Ila Patnaik, senior fellow at National Institute of Public Finance and Policy

โ€œIt was important for this government to give a signal that it will go ahead with reforms. Economic Survey is a statement that the chief economic advisor puts down things that the government wants to see. It is optimistic signs that they have got all this into the survey.โ€

ย Ashvin Parekh, partner, E&Y

โ€œThe issue of disinvestment should be seriously addressed. A framework is essential for mopping up Rs 25,000 crore through disinvestment.โ€
