Mamata launches Rs 25 monthly season ticket in ‘Izzat’ scheme
Press Trust of India
Friday, July 03, 2009 (New Delhi)

A new scheme – ‘Izzat' – was unveiled on Friday by Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee for the workers in the unorganised sector who can now travel upto 100 kms with a monthly season ticket of Rs 25.

"I want that every person should travel on our railways with dignity. I therefore wish to present the gift of travel with dignity to even the poorest of the poor," she said while presenting the Railway Budget 2009-10 in the Lok Sabha.

Under the 'Izzat' (dignity) scheme, monthly season ticket at a uniform rate of Rs 25 would be available free of all  surcharges for travel up to 100 kms for members of the unorganised sector with monthly income not exceeding Rs 1,500.

This will give lakhs of people in the country a chance to travel in trains with dignity, the minister said.

"I am disappointed with the Budget.
The shipping and shipbuilding
industry generates a lot of revenues
and employment. But it finds no mention
of the sector in the Budget."
