The key benchmark indices were trading higher in afternoon deals today led by advances in defensive counters. Gains were, however, capped on selling pressure in realty, PSU and oil & gas stocks. The Sensex surged 102 points to 14,145. The Nifty also gained 24 points to trade at 4,190.
Some buying interest was seen in FMCG, auto and capital goods stocks. The BSE auto index rose 3.2 per cent and the BSE capital goods index gained 0.9 per cent. In the FMCG space, Marico Industries, ITC and United Spirits gained more than 5 per cent each. The BSE realty index fell 1.5 per cent and the BSE oil & gas index slid 1.4 per cent. In the Sensex pack, ITC was the biggest gainer. The stock rose 6.4 per cent. Hero Honda, M&M and Maruti were the other gainers in the pack. In Asia, Japan's Nikkei and Hong Kong's Hang Seng were down over 0.3 per cent each. South Koreas’ s Kospi, however, was trading in the positive turf.
