The key benchmark indices were flat in the early deals amid losses in global markets. The Sensex was up 9 points at 17,232 levels and the Nifty fell 3 points to 5,110.
While IT stocks rose, metal and banking counters were under pressure.
Among the Sensex stocks, Hindalco was the biggest gainer. The stock rose 1.2 per cent in early trades. JP Associates, Hero Honda and Infosys were the other major gainers in the pack. However, Grasim, BHEL and Tata Power were among the main losers in the pack. The stocks fell more than 1 per cent each.
In the US markets, the Dow fell 50.71, or 0.5 percent, to 10,041.48 on Tuesday.
The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 6.85, or 0.6 percent, to 1,091.06. The Nasdaq composite index fell 12.85, or 0.6 percent, to 2,163.47.
Asian markets were trading lower today. Japan’s Nikkei and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng fell around 0.2 per cent per cent. South Korea’s Kospi slid 0.5 per cent.
