The key benchmark indices surged in early trades on the back of advances in world markets. The Sensex was up 185 points to 16,975 levels and the Nifty rose 1.1 per cent to 5,045.
Realty, metal and banking stocks moved higher today. The realty index on the BSE rose 2.2 per cent and the BSE metal index advanced 2.1 per cent. The BSE bankex also surged 1.5 per cent.
Among the Sensex stocks, Sterlite Ind led the gainers. The stock rose 2.7 per cent in early trades. Hindalco, JP Associates and DLF were the other major gainers in the pack. The stocks gained more than 2 per cent.
In US, stocks posted big gains on Thursday as investors snapped up financial shares after several banks said they weren't seeing as many loans go bad.
The Dow rose 131.95, or 1.3 percent, to 10,081.31. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 11.51, or 1.1 percent, to 1,092.91. The Nasdaq rose 14.56, or 0.7 percent, to 2,165.29.
Asian markets were also trading higher today. China’s Shanghai Composite jumped 1.8 per cent and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng rose 1.5 per cent. Nikkei in Japan was up 0.7 per cent.
