Rising food prices pushed the annual rate of inflation for food articles to 13.4 per cent in the week ended October 24, 2009. The annual rate of inflation for primary articles, which include food articles, for the week ended October 24, 2009, rose 8.94 per cent from a year earlier. In the previous week ended October 17, 2009, it was 8.67 per cent.

The Wholesale Price Index for the week ending October 24, 2009, in respect of primary articles declined by 0.1 per cent to 273 from 273.3 for the previous week.

As per the decision of the Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs (CCEA), the weekly release of Wholesale Price Index will henceforth cover only the primary articles and commodities and the broad group “Fuel, Power, Light & Lubricants”.  Monthly WPI covering all commodities for the month of October, 2009, will be released on November 12, 2009.

The primary articles, which include food articles, have a weight of 22.02 per cent in the overall inflation index.

The index for 'food articles' in the primary articles group declined by 0.3 per cent to 277.7 from 278.4 for the previous week due to lower prices of fish-marine (3 per cent), fruits & vegetables (2 per cent) and barley and jowar (1 per cent each). However, the prices of moong (3 per cent), wheat and bajra (2 per cent each) and condiments & spices and gram (1 per cent) moved up.

The index for  non-food articles in the primary articles group rose by  0.2  per cent to  236.3 from 235.8  for the previous week due to higher prices of raw silk  (6 per cent, raw rubber  3 per cent and castor seed, rape & mustard seed, raw cotton and copra (1 per cent each).  However, the prices of raw wool (6 per cent) and linseed and groundnut seed (1 per cent each) declined.

The index for the fuel, power, light & lubricants group remained unchanged at its previous week's level of 344.9. The fuel group has a weight of 14 per cent in the overall inflation index. The annual rate of inflation for the fuel group, calculated on point to point basis, remained unchanged at its previous week’s level of a negative 6.20 per cent for the week ended 24 October, 2009.  It was 13.59 per cent during the corresponding week ended of the previous year.
