State-backed oil producers Oil and Natural Gas Corp and Oil India may be exempt from paying subsidies to fuel retailers in the March quarter, a source familiar with the plan said on Friday.
The government has cut prices of natural gas to $5.02 per mmBtu, from $5.61, says Press Trust of India. The new rates will be effective from April 1.
In the first ever reduction in domestic natural gas prices, the rates will be slashed by 9 per cent to $4.56 per unit from April 1 to reflect the softening in international prices, benefiting users in the power and fertiliser sectors.
GAIL is looking to buy seven liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargoes for delivery from October 2015 until December 2016, according to the tender document obtained by Reuters.
A subsidy of up to Rs 7,500 crore will be provided to private power companies in the next two years as part of the scheme approved by the Cabinet to revive 31 electricity generating units stranded for want of gas.
The government said on Wednesday that it will boost imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to improve electricity generation and revive plants worth billions of dollars to fuel economic expansion.
