New Delhi: Indian stocks hit the day's low Wednesday on the back of monsoon worries and rising crude prices. A weak opening in European stocks also weighed on investor sentiments.

At 12.55 p.m., the Sensex was down 44 points or 0.25% at 17,382, while the Nifty traded 12 points lower at 5,276. The rupee, too, extended losses and traded at 54.75 to the dollar mark.

The benchmark indices were flat in the absence of domestic or global cues. The Sensex traded in a 140 point band, while the Nifty moved in a 40 point range. This is the third straight day of lacklustre trade on the Dalal Street.

High beta metal (1.5%) and realty stocks (0.8%) saw buying interest. Commodity stocks like JSPL (3.6%), Sterlite Industries (3%), and Sesa Goa (1.95%) were the top gainers on the Nifty index. Auto stocks (0.5%) like Maruti Suzuki (2%), Bajaj Auto (0.86%), and Hero MotoCorp (0.85%) also advanced.
Energy (-0.85%) and IT stocks (-0.9%) saw selling pressure. State run oil explorer ONGC (-2.7%) was the top Nifty loser. Wipro (-2%), HCL Tech (-1.8%), and Infosys (-0.74%) also traded lower.

Broader markets - small cap and midcap stocks - fared better than the frontline stocks.
