In the Nuapada district of Odisha, untouchability still prevails. Dalits are known as 'Harijans', a reflection of the deep conservatism in Oriya society. Here, Gandhiji's movement against untouchability left caste hierarchies intact and was never overtaken by Dr BR Ambedkar's legacy, which empowered Dalits to fight for their rights as equal citizens of the country.
